I was up visiting Sequoia a few weeks ago. I parked in the giant forest area and started hiking. It was a nice, cool day when I started. I was hiking for a few miles up and down hills when I came to a nice open clearing with a fallen tree that looked so inviting. So I sat down and took a long swig of water. I decided that maybe I could stay here a bit, so I unlaced my shoes and took them off. The sun now had moved so that it was directly on the spot I was sitting. The warmth of the sun felt so good. I decided to take off my socks and lay back on the log. I don’t think I fell asleep, but after a while, I heard some snuffling. I opened my eyes just enough to see what was making the noise. There, just a few feet away, was a black bear. It was sniffing my shoes and socks. I stayed very still and watched him. He smelled the shoes and socks a few more times, then he opened his mouth, grabbed my socks, and then ran off into the woods. I jumped up and then noticed a backpacker coming down the trail.
“Did you see that a bear stole my socks?” I said in exasperation.
“I see it all the time, its because he has bear feet.” The backpacker responded. “Youre just lucky that you didn’t have a hat for him to steal to protect his bear head.”
